Kenya

Tiwi Beach, South Coast, 17 kms south of Mombasa.

STYLE:

The cottage is a renovated old colonial house set amongst 10 acres of beautiful natural bush and indigenous palm nurseries. It is tastefully furnished from our own designer furniture and many soft furnishings. Many old trees surround the area with numerous native birds and wildlife present, including bush babies, many vervit monkeys, monitor lizards, mongoose, (dwarf, white tailed and marsh varieties) dik dik, serval cats and many more.
Sabine also has private stables on the property with three horses.
We have no domestic animals apart from horses.

DESCRIPTION:

The cottage is located in a private secure compound set a hundred meters back from the beach amongst a tropical palm nursery, there are two more cottages on the beach, one  the main house where Mike and Sabine live permanently,  the other to be renovated for future rental. All have access to the private beach.

The furniture in all the cottages is all made on site from our own Funzi Furniture Factory and all the furnishings are made by Sabine personally.

ACCOMMODATION:

The cottage has two bedrooms with 4 poster beds 2 meters by 2 meters, and an upstairs loft/lounge for one person. There is also the dining area and a separate lounge. The veranda is huge and is perfect for an afternoon nap on one of the Funzi beds. The kitchen is open and very practical and the bathroom is uniquely painted by hand.

THE FOOD:

You can either cook for yourself or if you wish you can hire a cook for US$10 a day who has been trained by Sabine in seafood and Italian dishes. Fresh fish, crabs and prawns come almost daily to the door. The locals also bring fresh fruit and vegetables to order. There is a small, well equipped supermarket only three km away up a murram road or there is a local shop 100 meters away along the beach for smaller things.

ACTIVITIES:

In the vicinity there are many walks and less than a kilometer along the reef at low tide are magnificent rock pools where you can swim or simply admire.
It is also a beautiful walk along the beach to the Tiwi river. Here you will find magnificent sunsets silhouetting the ancient Baobab trees near the old Congo mosque, a building dating back centuries. The river is also home to many birds including the rare nightjar heron.

Diani, the tourist centre on the south coast is only 10 kms.away. There you will find banks, restaurants, supermarkets, boutiques, bars, discos, casinos, car rental, hospital, dentist and an 18-hole championship golf course.
A nearby hotel in Tiwi also offers windsurfing, diving, squash and tennis and a very modern gym.
Deep sea fishing and any kind of safari can be arranged prior to your arrival.
The nearest game park is the Shimba Hills, just 20 min. drive from our house. The park is famed for it's elephants, cape buffalo and the rare sable antelope. Further a field but still only a few hours by car is the largest game reserve in the world, Tsavo National Park.
